In March 2023, Mesa County Valley School District announced the possibility of school closures, including Orchard Avenue Elementary. Ultimately, East Middle School was permanently closed in May 2023. This left numerous families blindsided and an estimated 40 people lost their jobs with only 2 months notice. West Middle School was greatly impacted by this closure, absorbing most of East Middle School's student body. This has caused overcrowding, budget deficit, reduced student performance, and most importantly the psychological impact on our students. 

As a result,  the school board has formed an Elementary Declining Enrollment Committee and school consolidation policy. An expected 
1-3 elementary school closures will be announced in December 2024. Orchard Avenue Elementary PTA will continue to advocate for our school and students. Please help us do so by attending  school board meetings, sending letters to school board members, making sure they are held accountable for following the process, and staying informed.
